Small Animal Imports

Effective July 14, 2021, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is temporarily suspending the importation of dogs from select countries. Please review their notice and the list of countries that will be affected if you are looking to import a dog from out of the country.

All animals entering the state of Idaho require, at the very least, a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI)*.  Individual species may have additional requirements as set forth in IDAPA 02.04.21 “Rules Governing the Importation of Animals.”  Please use this information as a general guide when shipping small animals into Idaho, and don’t hesitate to contact us when you have questions. These requirements only cover animals entering Idaho – please see our export resources if you are shipping animals to another state.

Permits are no longer required when using an approved electronic CVI form. The only approved eCVI forms are those from GlobalVetLink, State of Oregon, Vet Sentry, Sale Time, Mi-Corporation, myVetTech, Acclaim Systems VET CVI and State of Texas. If you are not using one of these forms, normal permit requirements still apply.

*Please note that effective January 1, 2019, Idaho stopped accepting the APHIS 7001 form as a valid CVI. Many states are making this change, and GlobalVetLink has a map showing which states currently accept the APHIS 7001.

Dogs and Cats
  • CVI with the full physical address of the destination.
  • Current rabies vaccination 12 weeks of age and older. Both 1-year or 3-year vaccines are accepted, as long as it is current.
Reptiles and Amphibians
  • CVI with the full physical address of the destination.
  • Reptiles or Amphibians listed on the Invasive Species list may not be allowed for importation. Please see the Idaho Invasive Species program website for possession applications.
Wildlife

“Wildlife” includes any animal generally living in a state of nature.

Note: Per Title 25, Chapter 2, Idaho Code, other than USDA-licensed exhibitors and active fur farms, no person may possess or import any raccoon, skunk or fox.

  • CVI with the full physical address of the destination.
  • Entry permit.
  • These animals may also require additional permits from the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, call (208) 454-7646 before importing them.
Exotic Animals

For pet pigs, even miniature pigs, please see the Swine Import information.

For birds of any type, please see our Avian Import information.

USDA has a quick reference guide for international movement of pets. If you are planning to travel across country borders, this information can help you navigate the process.

A summary of all companion animal import requirements is available in our Import Brochure, which may be printed out for your offline records.

If a small animal species is not listed above or on any of our other import pages, they likely require only a CVI for entry into Idaho. It is recommended you send an email or call (208) 332-8540 to verify.
