Avian Diseases

Avians can be affected by a number of diseases, but the ones most commonly seen and/or tested for in Idaho birds are avian influenza and Salmonella pullorum-typhoid.  Other diseases that can be of concern relating to birds are West Nile virus, Mycoplasma, and Newcastle disease.  Testing for disease helps protect the health of all avians in the state of Idaho.  Measures which can be taken to help with everyday animal health management can be found in our biosecurity resources.

Owners should be vigilant and promptly contact their regular veterinarian to schedule testing if they suspect they may have infected animals. The Animal Health Lab can run many different types of tests once appropriate samples have been obtained – contact themto see which tests they are able to run.

In addition to (and including) the above-mentioned diseases, Idaho has lists of diseases which are considered reportable or notifiable.  If found in an animal, these should be reported to Animal Industries in the appropriate timeframe.
