Small Animal Diseases

The term “small animal” can cover a number of species, but here it primarily refers to household pets such as cats, dogs, birds, lizards, small rodents, etc.  Bird diseases are covered in the avian disease section of our website, and pigs likewise, have their information under swine disease.  Common diseases that may be seen/tested for in small animals include rabies, Salmonella, and plague.  Animal owners should be vigilant and contact their veterinarian if they suspect they have a sick animal.

In addition to (and including) the above-mentioned diseases, Idaho has lists of diseases that are considered reportable or notifiable  If found in an animal, these should be reported to Animal Industries in the appropriate timeframe.
