Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus

What is porcine epidemic diarrhea virus?
Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDv) is a viral disease which has a short incubation period and can have a high infection rate.  It most severely affects young piglets that have not been able to build up immunity.

How is PEDv transmitted?
PEDv is transmitted through ingestion of feces from an infected animal.

What are the signs of infection?
Signs of infection can include diarrhea, severe vomiting, and dehydration.

What are the testing requirements for PEDv?
At this time there is no mandatory testing in Idaho, however, if you are concerned about infection within your herd they should be tested.

What can I do to prevent PEDv?
There is no vaccination or cure but, as with most diseases, the best prevention is to avoid contact with infected animals.  Additionally, having appropriate biosecurity plans in place can help significantly reduce the risk of transmission.
