What is pseudorabies?
Pseudorabies is a disease found primarily in swine which is caused by a herpesvirus.
 
How is pseudorabies transmitted?
Pseudorabies is generally transmitted through direct contact with discharges (such as nasal secretions, drool, and feces) from an infected animal, although respiratory transmission can occur.
 
What are the signs of infection?
Infected animals primarily display respiratory symptoms, although fever and weight loss can also be seen in infected animals.
 
What are the testing requirements for pseudorabies?
There is no mandatory testing in Idaho; however, if you are concerned about infection within your herd they should be tested.
 
Can pseudorabies infect humans?
Although it can be passed to cattle, sheep, goats, and wild animals, pseudorabies is not passed from swine to humans.
 
What can I do to prevent pseudorabies?
As with many diseases, good sanitation and biosecurity practices can help significantly reduce infection risk.  Additionally, you can ensure that all new additions to your herd are from pseudorabies negative herds.
 
Pseudorabies is a reportable disease in Idaho.
