Vesicular Stomatitis

Updates regarding any current Vesicular Stomatitis outbreaks are posted to the USDA APHIS Vesicular Stomatitis Page.

What is vesicular stomatitis?
Vesicular stomatitis (VS) is a vesicular disease, primarily found in livestock.

What are the signs of infection?
Excessive salivation, blisters, and erosions in the oral cavity can all be symptoms.

How is VS transmitted?
Biting insects can transmit VS from animal to animal.

What can I do to prevent VS in my animals?
There is no treatment or cure for VS, but good sanitation practices can help reduce your risk.

What are the testing requirements for VS?
Contact your veterinarian if you have concerns that your herd may be infected.

What do I do if my herd is positive?
Because the spread of VS is hard to control, a positive herd and those in a reasonable radius may have limited ability to move – especially across state lines. ISDA sets and releases quarantines for facilities found to be positive to VS.  If there is an outbreak, USDA will update their information on VS on a regular basis.

VS is a reportable disease in Idaho.
