Range Monitoring Program

Cooperative Photo Monitoring

The Idaho State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) signed two separate monitoring agreements that provide a framework for cooperative monitoring between grazing permittees and public land managers to improve the health of Idaho public rangelands. These agreements demonstrate the proactive partnership between agencies and partnering grazing permittees to collect and use range monitoring data, track changes in the health and function of public rangelands and inform management decisions.

ISDA encourages grazing permittees to consider participating in the cooperative monitoring program. The intent of both cooperative monitoring agreements is to maintain healthy rangelands and sustainable livestock grazing practices while offering permittees an opportunity for a greater level of engagement. Participating permittees would coordinate with ISDA and USFS or BLM to complete monitoring at selected sites across their grazing allotment throughout the term of their grazing permit(s). Please contact your local ISDA Range Specialist for more information about this program.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Idaho State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in 2014 that provides a framework for cooperative monitoring by ranchers and public land managers to improve the health of Idaho public rangelands. Interested permittees would coordinate with ISDA and their local BLM office to select monitoring sites across their allotment along with the appropriate monitoring protocols to be completed at each site throughout the term of their grazing permit(s).

Current monitoring protocols include photo monitoring, this cooperative agreement is intended to create a mutually beneficial arrangement in which permittees have an opportunity for a greater level of engagement on the monitoring and evaluation of their allotments and the BLM has access to an increased amount of qualitative and quantitative data for grazing management and permit renewal decisions. Both parties benefit from a shared understanding of grazing allotment trends and conditions. Please contact your local ISDA Range Specialist for more information about this program.

This cooperative agreement is intended to create a mutually beneficial arrangement in which permittees have an opportunity for a greater level of engagement on the monitoring and evaluation of their allotments and the BLM has access to an increased amount of qualitative data for grazing management and permit renewal decisions.
