Household Pet Imports

Please note that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) may have additional requirements in place for dogs entering the United States from another country. If you are moving a dog internationally, please review their information on Bringing a Dog into the U.S. and complete any required applications before importation into Idaho. These requirements are in addition to the below requirements for entry into Idaho.

All animals entering the state of Idaho require, at the very least, a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI). Additional requirements for individual species are listed below.

Idaho does not recognize APHIS 7001 form as a valid CVI. Many states are making this change, and GlobalVetLink has a map showing which states currently accept the APHIS 7001.

  • CVI with the full physical address of the destination.
  • Current rabies vaccination 12 weeks of age and older. Both 1-year or 3-year vaccines are accepted, as long as it is current.
  • CVI with the full physical address of the destination.
  • Reptiles or Amphibians listed on the Invasive Species list may not be allowed for importation. Please see the Idaho Invasive Species program website for possession applications.
  • CVI with the full physical address of the destination.
  • Monk Parakeets (also called Quaker Parrots) are Invasive Species and must meet those requirements.
  • CVI with the full physical address of the destination.
  • European Hedgehogs are considered Deleterious Exotic Animals and must meet those requirements.
  • CVI with the full physical address of the destination.
  • Entry Permit or eCVI*
  • The only primate species allowed outside of zoos are Capuchin, Marmoset, Spider Monkey and Squirrel Monkey. All others are considered Deleterious Exotic Animals and not allowed as household pets.

If the animal you are looking for is not listed here, check the Wildlife and Exotic import information to see if they fall into one of these categories.

If a typical household pet is not listed above or on any of our other import pages, they likely require only a CVI for entry into Idaho. We recommend you contact us to verify.

*Entry Permits are not required when using an approved electronic CVI form. The only approved eCVI forms are those from GlobalVetLink, State of Oregon, Washington OVIS, Vet Sentry, Sale Time, Mi-Corporation, myVetTech, Acclaim Systems VET CVI and State of Texas. If you are not using one of these forms, normal permit requirements still apply. Please note VSPS is NOT an approved eCVI system.
