Newcastle Disease

What is Newcastle disease?
Newcastle disease is a contagious viral infection found in most avian species.

How is Newcastle disease transmitted?
Newcastle disease is transmitted through contact with bodily fluids, such as feces or respiratory discharges, from infected birds.  The virus can travel in feed, feathers, clothing, and other surfaces which have come in contact with these fluids.  It can also be found in eggs and the carcasses of diseased birds.

What are the signs of infection?
Infected avians may show respiratory symptoms, such as gasping or coughing, as well as droopy wings or paralysis, loss of appetite, decreased egg production, circling, and diarrhea.

What can I do to prevent Newcastle disease?
As with most infections, good biosecurity practices can help prevent Newcastle disease in your flock.

Am I required to test for Newcastle disease?
There is no mandatory testing requirement for Newcastle disease.  If you suspect your flock may be infected, contact your veterinarian.

Newcastle disease is a reportable disease in Idaho.
