Swine Diseases

Swine can be affected by a number of diseases, but the ones most commonly seen and/or tested for in Idaho swine are porcine brucellosis, porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDv), and pseudorabies. Testing for disease helps protect the health of the industry and ensures that all goods from Idaho swine, such as meat products, remain safe for consumption.  Other measures can be taken to help with everyday animal health management.  To this end, we have compiled resources to assist with biosecurity on your premises.

Producers should be vigilant and respond quickly if they suspect they may have infected animals in their herd by contacting their regular veterinarian to schedule testing.  The Animal Health Lab can run many different types of tests once appropriate samples have been obtained – contact them to see which tests they are able to do.

In addition to (and including) the above-mentioned diseases, Idaho has lists of diseases that are considered reportable or notifiable.  If found in an animal, these should be reported to Animal Industries in the appropriate timeframe.
